JAMES MASSENA MARCH

James March will be exhibiting examples of his continuing explorations of pictorial space in vivid, geometric abstractions.  Additional concerns evident in the work include structure and composition, the formal and expressive potential of color relationships, and a precise, complex method of paint application. Despite the appearance of a precisely delineated plan, an intuitive process of exploration is generally how the work comes about. The resulting images are an imaginative, even disorienting, blend of physical and mental spaces.

James March was born in Cleveland and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He received a BA from Cleveland State University and an MFA from Kent State
University. He has exhibited extensively on a regional and national level. His work is in the collections of PNC Bank, Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve
University, among others and in many private collections as well, and was awarded the Ohio Arts Prize for Painting in 2009.

RYN CLARKE
Artist Statement

Ryn Clarke is a fine art photographer who was introduced to photography at an early age by her father. She spent endless hours watching him develop and hand-color black and white prints. Her professional career began as an apprentice at an advertising/photography studio in Cleveland, Ohio back in the 1970’s, which helped to re-ignite her interest in photography.

In the 1980’s, she founded a graphic design business and suspended her interest in photography to build a clientele and serve customer needs. Ten years ago, she purchased her first Canon digital camera…and has focused her energy and passion in capturing the mysteries of the hidden, quiet depths of landscape and macro photography.

Her work is often described as a “wabi-sabi” approach to photography - an aesthetic appreciation of the evanescence of life. Wabi-sabi images evoke an existential loneliness and tender sadness. Things wabi-sabi have a vague, blurry quality. Once hard edges take on a soft pale glow. Once-bright saturated colors fade into muddy earth tones or the smokey hues of dawn and dusk.

In her landscapes, she is drawn to that mysterious lighting and the emotional atmosphere that is created by low-lying fog or rain or snow, that minor or hidden scene that patiently unfolds itself. Her macro work reflects her ability to use ambient light enhancing both the subject matter and the background, creating an almost “chiarscuro” effect, the painting style using light and shadow, color or absence of color.

Her work has been exhibited in various galleries, private collections and hospital permanent collections in Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, West Virginia, Minnesota, Washington, California, and Cleveland. Her creative inspiration comes from the powerful black and white visions of Michael Kenna, John Sexton and Cole Thompson, and the color work of Georgia O’Keefe and the great 17th C. artist, Caravaggi

THE FIRST FOREST
“If you ever wonder in winter when you walk in the snow, Why some trees stand naked while cold north winds blow. Come with me to visit a woodland I know…”

So begins the modern fable of The First Forest, by John Gile – an allegory that reminds us that “greed and selfishness are harmful and that peace and harmony flow from an attitude of grateful appreciation for the gifts we receive and a respect for the need and right of others to share in those gifts.”

Inspired by this children’s story, Ryn Clarke shares with you her journey through forests each season. She invites you to experience the depths of the destructive forces of self-indulgence along side the seasonal renewal of love and tranquility through her photographic depiction of the life cycle of trees.
